Something had changed between Glenna and Brent since the sea urchin accident. Glenna couldn’t pinpoint exactly why she looked at Brent differently, but she did. She didn’t know how she ever saw him as a wayward convict, a man doomed to repeat his mistakes. He was an honorable, sensitive man and too handsome for her peace of mind. Somehow along the way God had changed her thinking. It was subtle but so different—and it confused her! It went against everything her mother had taught her.

Aside from her emotional turmoil, business was picking up. Brent had suggested changes—mostly cosmetic—and more donations were starting to trickle in. It was amazing what a fresh coat of paint could do! But something was still missing. They needed something spectacular to lure the crowds, but the solution eluded Glenna. If she was going to save the marine sanctuary, she needed to figure it out—and fast.

She decided to take the question to her dad.

“Brent and I have discussed this many times,” her father answered when Glenna asked his opinion. “He says we need Veero.”

“Veero? I was talking about another government grant. We could file another petition—”

He shook his head. “There are no more grants—not for us at any rate. They’ve refused our last two petitions. But Veero will help us.”

“Veero? What’s Veero?” she asked.

“Veero is the solution to saving this sanctuary. I thank the Lord often for Brent and his great ideas.”

“Dad, what’s Veero?” Glenna asked again.

In answer her father moved over to the coffee table and scooped up a large rolled sheet of paper. Carefully he unfurled the paper across the table. Glenna peered at the picture over her father’s shoulder.

“Dad, it’s beautiful!” Glenna was surprised at the meticulous pencil drawing of a beluga whale. It was drawn so well that she could even detect a glimmer of humor in the creature’s eyes. Where had the drawing come from? And what did it have to do with Brent’s ideas for the sanctuary?

“This is Veero!” he said triumphantly.

“Dad, how is this drawing going to save the sanctuary? I don’t make the connection.”

“The whale, not the drawing, is going to help us,” her father said, as though he were explaining it to a child. “Veero is a small whale who was injured a few years ago and couldn’t be released to the wild. He needs a new home. We can bring Veero here, and he’ll pull in the crowds. It’s very simple.”

It didn’t seem nearly so simple to Glenna, but maybe this was the solution she was looking for. “How will a new acquisition make money rather than cost us money?” she asked.

Her father looked up from the drawing and smiled. Glenna listened to her father’s explanation, thought for a few minutes, then cautiously agreed to give Veero a chance.

❧

To move Veero from Galveston, Texas, to the Marine Mammal Sanctuary of Long Beach would be a stroke of genius, Glenna decided. Veero wasn’t just any whale—he was a glossy white beluga with a vibrant personality. She knew he’d make a dramatic difference.
